The Fresh and Saltwater Fish of Kodiak Island

There are many species of fish around Kodiak; in the ocean saltwater around the island, and in the freshwater rivers on the island. Ling Cod, Gray Cod, Black Sea Bass, Yellow Eye, Dolly Varden, Sockeye Salmon, Steelhead and rainbow trout. Excellent fishing opportunities are everywhere on the island.

But the real stars of the show are the huge Wild Alaskan Halibut, the fast-swimming Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon), and the big beautiful King Salmon (also known as Chinook Salmon and “Trophy Kings”).

And Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge has the best per-person best daily limits in Alaska. We even meet you at the dock after your day on the water. We’ll track your catch (to make sure you bring home everything you caught), fillet, clean, vacuum-seal, and freeze your catch each day. Then we’ll package, label, and pack your catch in a fifty-pound insulated, airline-approved box for you to carry home.

Wild Alaskan Halibut

Wild Alaskan Halibut fishing is one of the most exhilarating saltwater fishing experiences you’ll ever have. They’re one of the biggest fish in the sea, can grow up to eight feet long, and weigh as much as 700 pounds. Alaskan halibut is highly sought after because of its mild flavor and firm, flaky texture. It’s fast becoming one of America’s favorite seafood dishes.

To date, the largest Alaska halibut ever caught was 533 pounds. Due to the high concentration of halibut in the Gulf of Alaska, the waters off Kodiak Island provide some of the best halibut fishing available.

Keep in mind, Halibut are limited to two per person per day (May – September).

Silver Salmon (Coho Salman)

Silvers are fast, aggressive swimmers. They have firm, mild, orange flesh that is great for canning, and excellent for grilling. Silvers are a favorite with fishermen. Ten-to 22-pound Silver Salmon arrive in early July.

The freshwater creeks and shallow rivers of Kodiak Island are a dream for both fly fishermen and spin anglers. Mid-August through the end of September will provide you with more action than you can imagine.

Silvers are limited to five per person per day. River fishing requires an additional Land Use fee.

King Salmon (Chinook Salmon)

King salmon are one of the most popular fishing experiences on Kodiak Island. And no wonder.

Kings are a prized catch out there due to their massive size, firm texture, and rich flavor, making them prime table fare. Peak Alaska king salmon fishing season runs from May through mid-July, but they can be found here year-round. “Trophy Kings” arrive in May through June. 30-to-90-pound kings feed in these waters and People come from all over the world to catch these incredible 50-pound plus bright-as-chrome beauties.

We troll for Kings using down-riggers and herring bait. So don’t be surprised if you happen to land a big Halibut, Ling Cod, Black Bass, or Grey Cod while trolling for Kings.

King Salmon are limited to 2 per person per day, May – September.
