The Sitka Blacktail Deer Species
What does a Sitka blacktail deer look like? Unlike mule deer, this species is relatively more stocky and shorter (with smaller faces) than many deer species. In prime hunting season, their reddish-brown coats have already turned to their winter color of grayish brown. They stand out from other deer with a double white throat patch and dark black forehead. Named for their triangular black tails with a white underside, these deer are easy to spot on Kodiak Island.
When is the Perfect Time for Hunting Sitka Blacktail Deer?
At Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge, we know the perfect times to bag a blacktail deer. That’s why we schedule deer hunting trips from November to December. At this time, the deer are in the rut — a time when mating behavior is in full swing. In addition, Kodiak Island has mild winters compared to many other places in Alaska. The weather is crisp but bearable, with average highs ranging from 43 to 36 degrees and average lows between 41 and 28 degrees. The deer are active, and the populations are plentiful. Deer season actually begins in August, but we choose November and December when you can hunt for both the doe and buck.
Savor the Thrill of the Hunt
On Kodiak Island, the Sitka blacktail population is dynamic. In mild winters, the deer flourish, and you will see many more deer. In harsher weather, the deer are fewer. That makes deer hunting more challenging. Yet, fewer people are hunting for deer in this remote location, so you will still have many opportunities to see and bag them. Savoring the thrill of the hunt means enjoying your time in the vast Alaskan wilderness while engaging in the exciting sport of deer hunting.
Sitka Blacktails & More
While you are out on your Alaskan wildlife adventure, following this big game species, don’t forget that Sitka blacktail deer are not the only game in town. Like with most deer species, there is a legal limit. Once you get as many deer as the limit allows, you can go fishing for King salmon. Duck hunters will appreciate the chance to spot magnificent waterfowl. It’s also a great time to hunt for foxes. If you’re successful in bagging your deer right away, there’s no need to sit back at the lodge for the final days of your hunting trip!
