Salmon and Halibut Fishing in Alaska: Why Kodiak Island is Your Prime Destination

It’s often been said that a bad day of fishing is always better than a good day at work. For those of us here at the Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge, we couldn’t agree more. Then again, we’re lucky to live where we do — in a pristine area of Alaska waters that holds plentiful amounts of Halibut and Salmon, so we rarely ever have a bad day of fishing!

On Kodiak Island, salmon fishing and halibut fishing often go hand in hand. In fact, with seasons that overlap, it’s not uncommon for us to catch large Halibut while trolling for King salmon. So, if you’re ready to try your hand at some of the best fishing that Alaska has to offer, let Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge be your guide.

Guided Halibut Fishing on Kodiak Island

If you’ve never met a Halibut before, be prepared! These are some of the largest fish in the ocean and can grow up to eight feet long — and weigh in at over 700 pounds. Keep in mind that the Gulf of Alaska has high populations of big Halibut and this makes Kodiak Island a prime spot for Halibut fishing.

Another thing to remember is that Halibut are practically year-round residents here, but prime season runs from early June to mid-September. In fact, they’re so prevalent during this time that sometimes you’ll snag one while trolling just 30 feet deep for King salmon.

When it comes right down to it, the Sitkalidak area is a world-renowned halibut haven. Here, you’ll find all sizes in shallow waters (typically 30′ to 140′) with barely a current to fight. And forget the deep-sea battles with heavy weights — it’s all about light tackle and feeling the tug.

After a successful day on the water, our fish processing expert will be waiting for you dockside. They’ll track your catch, so you know you’re taking home exactly what you reeled in. Your prize will be perfectly filleted, cleaned, vacuum-sealed, and frozen. Then, your catch will be boxed up in a 50-pound insulated, airline-approved container — ready to fly home with you.

Salmon Fishing on Kodiak Island

Ernest Hemingway once said, “Anyone can be a fisherman in May.” And that saying just might be true because around here, May is when peak King Salmon fishing season begins on Kodiak Island.

As we’re one of the best locations for salmon fishing, you’ll have your pick of King salmon, or Coho (Silver salmon) when you come to our lodge. And keep in mind that we provide you with everything you’re going to need for an outstanding fishing experience — including all of your fishing gear as well as permits.

King Salmon Fishing

Our prized King salmon can be found throughout the year, but from May to mid-July, this marks our peak season. And we often refer to this as the “Trophy King” season — as this timeframe sees large salmon ranging from 30 to 90 pounds congregating in the nutrient-rich waters near Kodiak. Just imagine battling these legendary fish with expert guides at your side. Even with a 2-king limit per day, per person from May to September, when you come to Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge, you’re sure to go home with a full catch.

Silver Salmon Fishing

Around here, our Silver salmon are known for their swift, fierce nature and their delectably firm, mild, orange flesh — a true gem for anglers seeking a thrilling catch. These beauties, ranging from ten to 22 pounds, start making their appearance in early July, and we tackle them much like we do with Alaskan King Salmon.

Remember, the peak season for Alaska Silver Salmon fishing kicks into high gear from mid-August through September. And you can rest assured that your boxes will be filled with the daily limit of five Silvers per person!
