Alaskan Halibut Size and Appearance

Pacific halibut can grow to truly impressive sizes — making them one of the largest flatfish species in the world. Adult halibut commonly range in length from 20 inches to over 8 feet, and they can weigh anywhere from 20 to over 500 pounds. In fact, the largest Alaskan halibut caught thus far weighed in at 533 pounds. And these giants, sometimes referred to as “barn doors,” are especially sought after by anglers due to their size and the challenge they present.

Additionally, like all flatfish, the Pacific halibut has a flattened, diamond-shaped body that lies sideways on the ocean floor. The eyes are positioned on the upper side while the underside is lighter in color. The color of these behemoths varies, but they often have a mottled appearance that helps them blend into their surroundings. For example, their top side can range from olive to dark brown or even black, while their underside is usually white.

One of the most striking features of a Pacific halibut’s appearance is its disproportionately large and highly pigmented eyes. These are situated on the top side of the fish and allow them to see above and around them while lying flat on the ocean floor, while their mouths extend beyond the eyes with sharp teeth suited for capturing prey.

Alaska Halibut Fishing Charters

Before you start spending hundreds of dollars on Alaska fishing gear, remember, we have all the gear you’ll need when you book one of our all-inclusive fishing trips or a full-day charter at Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge. And the great news is that halibut can be caught throughout the year — but the optimal fishing period is from June 1st to mid-September.

It’s also good to point out that with the abundance of halibut near Kodiak Island, we frequently encounter them while trolling in water as shallow as thirty feet — even when targeting King salmon. And the nearby Sitkalidak region boasts some of the finest halibut fishing in Alaska. So, whether you’re angling in relatively shallow waters (ranging from 30 to 140 feet deep) with gentle currents, you’ll easily discover halibut of all sizes.

Remember, though many anglers prefer engaging in deep-water fishing amid strong currents — this isn’t the norm here. And in such circumstances, using substantial weights becomes necessary to reach the ocean floor. Additionally, the daily limit for halibut fishing is two halibut per person from May to September.
